Ranthambore safari booking, without the guesswork

Permits, zones, shifts, vehicles and IDs — here is how it actually works, and why we book by conversation rather than by cart.

Who issues the permits

Every Ranthambore safari seat is a permit issued by the Rajasthan Forest Department for a specific zone, date and shift. Seats per zone per shift are fixed. When they are gone, they are gone — no resort, agent or website can create more. That single fact explains almost everything frustrating about booking Ranthambore: the sold-out dates, the confusing portal, the premium "current booking" quota, and the operators who take your money first and hunt for a permit later.

Our rule: we secure your permit first and take payment second. If your preferred zone or shift is sold out, we tell you straight and offer the real alternatives — another shift, another zone, a canter instead of a gypsy, or different dates.

Zones, in plain language

Zones 1–5The classic core with the three lakes and the fort. Open 1 October – 30 June. Highest demand.
Zones 6–10Added later; open year-round including the monsoon. Quieter, and several have excellent tiger sightings.
AllocationYour zone is fixed on the permit. Booking three safaris across different zones beats obsessing over one "best" zone.
Half / full dayPremium permits allowing you to stay in the park through the day, in tiny numbers. The photography option.

Timings and vehicles

ItemWhat to expect
ShiftsTwo per day: morning and afternoon, each roughly 3–3.5 hours. Start times shift with the season — earlier in summer, later in winter.
GypsyOpen 4×4, 6 guests + driver and guide. Better for photography and quieter. Booked out first.
CanterOpen 20-seater. Lower cost per person, easier at short notice.
FaresSet by the forest department; different for Indian and foreign nationals; separate vehicle and guide charges. We quote one all-in figure.
IDsA government photo ID for every guest, matching the permit, checked at the gate. Foreign nationals: passport.
CancellationPermits are non-refundable once issued. Stay and meals follow the property's policy, which we state before you pay.

When to book

November to February, all weekends, Diwali, Christmas–New Year and long weekends sell out weeks ahead — for those dates, message us as soon as your plan is real. October, March and the summer months are easier, and April–June often gives the year's best sightings with lighter demand. Monsoon (July–September) means zones 6–10 only, green forest and the lowest prices.
