In short: Ranthambore runs two safaris a day, morning and afternoon, each about 3 to 3.5 hours, with gate times that move with the season. The park is divided into ten zones: 1 to 5 are the old lake-and-fort core, open October to June; 6 to 10 are the quieter outer zones, open all year. Zones are allocated by the Forest Department, not chosen, and tigers are seen in every one of them. Below are the timings by month and an honest word on each zone.

The ten zones, honestly

Full zone-by-zone guide: what is in each of zones 1 to 10 →

Zones 1 to 5: the core

The original park around the three lakes, Padam Talao, Rajbagh and Malik Talao, with the fort above. Classic Ranthambore scenery and the best-known tigresses. These zones are the first to sell out and are closed July to September and on Wednesdays.

Zones 6 to 10: the outer park

Opened later and less crowded: Kundal (6), Chidikho (7), Balas (8), Kuwalji (9) and Aantri (10). Drier, more open country, excellent for sloth bear and leopard, and with resident tigers of their own. Open all year except Tuesdays, and usually easier to book.

The honest version of the “best zone” question: the best zone is wherever the resident tiger is moving that week, which changes. We tell you what has been seen recently when you ask, we request your preferred zone, and we never promise one. A seat in zone 8 beats waiting for zone 3.

Planning around the timings

Timings and zones questions

What are Ranthambore safari timings?

Two drives a day, each about 3 to 3.5 hours. Roughly: October 6:30 to 10:00 am and 2:30 to 6:00 pm; November to January 7:00 to 10:30 am and 2:00 to 5:30 pm; February and March 6:30 to 10:00 am and 2:30 to 6:00 pm; 1 April to 15 May 6:00 to 9:30 am and 3:00 to 6:30 pm; 16 May to 30 June 6:00 to 9:30 am and 3:30 to 7:00 pm. From July to September only zones 6 to 10 are open. The department adjusts the exact gate times each season.

Which is better, the morning or the afternoon safari?

Mornings are cooler, quieter and better for birds; afternoons are warmer and in summer better for tigers at water. Sighting odds are similar over a season. If you can, do one of each.

Which zone is best for tigers in Ranthambore?

There is no permanently best zone. Zones 1 to 5 are the old core with the lakes and the fort views; zones 6 to 10 are newer and quieter. Resident tigers move, and every zone has produced long sightings this year. The department allocates zones; we pass on your request.

Which Ranthambore zones are open?

Zones 6 to 10 run all year. Zones 1 to 5 run from 1 October to 30 June and close for the monsoon. Zones 1 to 5 do not run on Wednesdays and zones 6 to 10 do not run on Tuesdays.

How long is a Ranthambore safari?

About 3 to 3.5 hours inside the park, plus pickup. Half-day and full-day safaris are not offered by us; booking two drives in different zones is the way to spend longer in the park.

Can I choose my zone?

You can request one when you book and we tell you honestly how likely it is. Allocation is done by the Forest Department’s system and no operator can guarantee a zone.
